Congratulations! You have an Amish Friendship Bread starter! It's magical and only the Amish know how to make it.
Here's what to do with it:
Day 1 (the day you got the starter, unless you were told otherwise): Squish the bag.
Day 2: Squish the bag.
Day 3: Squish the bag.
Day 4: Squish the bag.
Day 5: Add 1 1/2 cup of each of the following: milk, white sugar, flour. Squish until blended.
Day 6: Back to squishing. Let any air out if the bag's inflated at all. This is a normal part of the fermentation/yeasty process.
Day 7: Again with the squishing.
Day 8: Still squishing.
Day 9: Same drill.
Day 10: The day of baking! (mildly flexible)
Pour bag into bowl - make sure the bowl and any stirring implements are plastic or glass, not metal.
Add 1 1/2 cup each: milk, sugar, flour. Blend.
Put 1 cup of the goo in each of 1 gallon size Ziploc bags. You keep one if you want to bake again. You give the rest away-
thus the "friendship" factor. you should have about 1 1/2 cups of goo left to bake with.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Add the following:
1 c sugar
2 T cinnamon
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 c milk
1/2 t salt
2 c flour
1 c oil
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 large pudding mix
1/2 t vanilla extract
Grease two bread pans. Take 1/2 c sugar mixed with about 1/2 t cinnamon and dust the pans with the mixture.
Pour in the batter, and pour the rest of the cinnamon sugar on top.
Bake 45 min to an hour. If you're making muffins, 35 minutes.
